Keep Google Chrome under control

Since it’s entry into the world of internet browsers in 2008 Google Chrome has become more popular with each year that passes and now approximately 63% of people browsing the web are using it.

However, this doesn’t mean that Google’s browser is perfect, and one flaw it has is that it uses a lot of memory (RAM) when compared to it’s competitors.
Looking at the reason why, you see that it’s not entirely a bad thing.

In Chrome when you open a new window or tab your PC treats each one as a separate process unlike IE or Firefox which bunch them all together as one.The Downside to this is that Chrome will use more resources duplicating some tasks.

The upside to this is that, if a Chrome tab or window crashes you won’t lose everything else with it. The only time Chrome’s memory hogging will become a problem is if it starts to slow your PC down, and even then there are a couple of ways to fix this.

The first fix is simply to install more RAM, this will mean more memory for your PC to use and more space for Chrome to work but, this isn’t always an option.

The second fix is to use a Chrome extension to help. If you’re not sure, a Chrome extension is a plugin to add more functions to the browser.

The Great Suspender is a Chrome extension which will “suspend” (pause) a tab after a period of inactivity and let you come back to it later, it may take a few seconds to load when you return to it but that’s only because Chrome is having to read it from scratch, when tabs are suspended they do not use as much memory.

One Tab is similar to The Great Suspender but it isn’t automatic. The difference is instead of just pausing a tab it will place the links of any sites you choose which you currently have open, into one single tab for you to restore at a later date. It’s options are all tabs, only this tab and all tabs except this. These options can be found by right clicking on the icon at the end of the address bar once you’ve installed the extension.
