Useful Android apps to know about

When you look at the apps on your Android device, it may be the case that many of them are there because they have been recommended by Google’s Play store, a friend or a colleague for you to install, or maybe even from a tip in an email.
Here is a list that we have compiled of some useful apps that you may not already know.

  1. Google GogglesA different way of searching. Google Goggles will let you take a picture of an object or of some text and then perform a Google search using the image or text that is picked up in your picture. If it notices something in a foreign language your phone will also offer to translate it for you.
  2. MalwarebytesMalwarebytes is one of those apps you probably won’t ever need – but on the off chance you do, you’ll be glad its there. If you happen to be one of those users who installs from third-party sites, this app rises from “hope to never need” to “absolutely must use.” If you install it, enable the real-time protection (because most users forget to run their anti-malware when it’s a manual process).
  3. WazeIf you drive a lot and need to know when streets are closed or backed up or find out other ways your commute might be affected, Waze is the app for you. It uses a social network of users to report conditions of routes and gives you real-time feedback of events that can help guide you on the most efficient route to your destination.
  4. Nova LauncherNova Launcher blows away most other Android launchers available. This particular take on the Android launcher offers the best balance of performance and options. Even with the bells and whistles, you don’t feel like you’re working with a heavy-handed app. It’s smooth and fast. Nova offers ‘Okay Google’ hotword support, customization of the app drawer, scrollable dock, backup/restore, and much more.
  5. Total CommanderTotal Commander is, by far, one of the ugliest file managers you’ll ever use. It is also one of the best. If offers a built-in text editor, properties dialog, FTP/sFTP/WebDAV/OBEX support, plug-ins for cloud services, and features that let you copy/move whole subdirectories, drag and drop, zip/unzip/rar, select/unselect groups of files, search, select a range of files/folders, and much more.
