CCTV for SME Businesses

CCTV

Owning a small or medium sized business means a whole lot of responsibility on your shoulders for many reasons; you have many priorities and one of them is taking care of your property and all the equipment that is in it. Protecting your technology and equipment with anti-virus, encryption, security tags and passwords shows that protection is an obvious necessity, but it may not be the only protection you are considering. CCTV can be highly effective for your business, not only for safety, but also insurance purposes. As with most decisions involved with your own business, there are things you need to consider before going ahead.

When installing CCTV outside of your building, not only do you have to make everyone in the building aware of you doing this, you also have to make the public aware. By failing to install the correct signage to alert people and let them know they will be appearing on your CCTV, you are failing the data protection act. The new way of doing so is registering with ICO, which is a very small fee considering the alternative fines you could be facing. Small organisations (maximum turnover of £632,000 or no more than 10 staff) will pay the ICO £40 a year, while SMEs (maximum turnover of £36m or no more than 250 employees) will pay the ICO £60. Previously those with a turnover of up to £25.9m and less than 250 staff members paid £35.

So, before installing CCTV in your premises, do the necessities and register. Let all your employees know after registering, which should be first and foremost priority, and follow suit with making other office users in the building aware. Be alert of your businesses surroundings, but also alert others. As always, research what needs to be in place prior to going ahead with any installation. The benefits will definitely outweigh the research that needs to be taken, ensuring your business and technology has full protection and insurance. It is always better to be safe than sorry when owning a business!
