What’s all this IoT?
IoT is short for Internet of Things. Internet of Things is the network of physical objects that feature an IP address for internet connectivity which enables the objects to connect and exchange data.
It extends internet activity between typical devices such as desktops & laptops, smart phones and tablets to a larger range of everyday things and devices such as vehicles and home appliances. These household appliances can be anything from coffee machines to lamps to headphones.
As it continues to grow at a rapid pace, it is estimated by the analyst firm Gartner that by 2020 there will be over 26 billion devices connected. This seems like quite a scary, large figure; however, this will be between people-people, people-things and things-things.
We are already in a world where technology makes everyday activities easier for the majority of people and IoT will be doing the exact same thing. The ways in which it will affect you is by for instance your vehicle being linked to your calendar and therefore knowing your plans for the day and finding the quickest route to get you to where you need to be.
It can also be that your alarm clock notifies the coffee machine so that it is ready for you. Making things super easy and adaptable for you personally. IoT will mean endless opportunities and connections happening all over the world, and even though it will have positive opportunities for people and is of course an ingenious step up in the technology world, it will also come with security risks for everyone.
With everything being connected, what does this mean for people’s personal information being more accessible to others? Data sharing will be so popular within companies that the security will have to be a main priority for company owners and for people’s personal devices. With technology growing at an extremely rapid pace, IoT will no doubt be well known all over in a few years to come but as mentioned, make sure your data is fully secure and protected.
