Windows 10 support has ended: what should your business do now?

Microsoft ended free security updates for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. If your business still runs Windows 10, you should act now: move eligible PCs to Windows 11, replace devices that can’t upgrade, or use Microsoft’s paid Extended Security Updates as a short bridge while you plan. Carrying on with unsupported Windows 10 leaves you exposed to new security flaws that will never be fixed.

This isn’t only a security issue. It affects your compliance position, your cyber insurance and your access to new tools. Here is what to weigh up.

Why this matters

Once an operating system stops getting security updates, attackers actively target it, because any new flaw stays open forever. Running unsupported software can also breach your UK GDPR duty to keep data secure, fail card-payment requirements, and give a cyber insurer grounds to reduce or refuse a claim. In short, the risk grows every month you wait.

Your options

  • Upgrade to Windows 11 on PCs that meet the requirements. This is the best long-term answer and unlocks newer security and productivity features.
  • Replace older devices that can’t run Windows 11. Many business PCs from the last few years are eligible, but some will need replacing.
  • Use Extended Security Updates (ESU) as a short, paid bridge if you genuinely need more time, while you plan the move. ESU is a stopgap, not a destination.

How to do it smoothly

Start with an audit of every device: which can upgrade, which need replacing, and what software needs checking for compatibility. Then plan the rollout in stages so work isn’t disrupted, with data backed up and settings carried across. Done properly, the move is straightforward and a good moment to standardise your fleet.

A real example: standardised, well-managed devices

We supported a client as they grew from 1 office to 6 and from 20 users to 75 in two years, keeping devices standardised and well managed throughout. A managed approach makes an upgrade like this routine rather than disruptive.
