Don’t let the wrong IT partner cost you more than just money. Here’s exactly what to look for.

How do you plan for high availability and failover?

How do you plan for high availability and failover?

You plan for high availability by identifying the systems that cannot go down, removing single points of failure, keeping ready replicas, and testing failover so it actually works. The goal is simple: when one component fails, the system as a whole keeps running, because something is ready to take over. For critical systems, that design is what prevents a small fault from becoming a full outage.

High availability is about designing out the weak links. Here’s the approach.

1. Identify what can’t go down

Not everything needs the same level of resilience. We work out which systems are truly critical, so investment goes where downtime would hurt most, rather than gold-plating everything.

2. Remove single points of failure

A single server, line or device that could take everything down is a risk. We design in redundancy for the critical pieces, so no single failure stops the whole system.

3. Keep ready replicas

For critical systems, a second, up-to-date copy ready to take over means failover can happen quickly. Replication keeps that standby current, so switching over loses as little as possible.

4. Test the failover

Failover that has never been tested may not work when you need it. We test it so that, when a real failure happens, the switch-over is smooth and proven rather than a gamble.

A real example: replication kept ready

We supported a software company serving financial trading firms where we monitored the health of its replication, catching warnings early so the standby copy of critical systems stayed ready to take over. Keeping that failover healthy is what makes high availability real rather than theoretical.

For a software, technology or financial trading firm, this is part of managed IT and security that usually costs about £45 to £100 per user per month, scaling with your headcount, your security needs and how much uptime the business depends on.

Why technology and trading firms choose First Stop IT

First Stop IT has supported businesses since 2002, including software and technology companies and firms that serve financial markets. We know the systems these teams depend on: secure VPN and remote access, source control and build pipelines, virtual dev and test environments, Microsoft 365 and Teams, and the security that banks and regulators expect, from multi-factor authentication and endpoint protection to application allowlisting and email security. We work with technology and trading firms in London and across Essex and Hertfordshire. Our credentials include:

  • Cyber Essentials Certified
  • IASME Cyber Assurance (Gold)
  • NCSC Assured Service Provider (Cyber Advisor for Cyber Essentials)
  • Microsoft Partner
  • Crown Commercial Service Supplier (G-Cloud)
  • Quality Principles Certified

We look after more than 2,000 endpoints across 50 companies, we’ve been named a Top 50 UK MSP for three years running, and we support organisations with 10 to 100 employees across Essex, Hertfordshire and London, including Harlow and Bishop’s Stortford.
