Over time, your computer can start to run slowly and there are many reasons why this may be the case. However here are a few simple things that you can do to help get the best out of your computer.
- Uninstall the “Bloatware” that came with it
Manufacturers often install software that you will never use. Remove it to free up system resources.
- Limit start-up items
By using MSconfig to select which programs start when you boot your computer you will improve the speed and performance of the machine. There is no need to have all of your programs starting when you turn your PC on.
- Update your software
Software patches for Windows, Office, and other packages often improve the speed, reliability or security of the program. Make sure you stay up to date.
By defragmenting your hard drive regularly you will improve its performance. This does not apply to Solid State Drives – these should not be de-fragmented.
- Change power settings to maximum performance
Only applies to laptops
- Remove viruses and spyware
Make sure you have a good antivirus program installed and make sure that it is up to date. Run regular scans to make sure that your machine is free from anything nasty that could slow it down and compromise your security
